Having a trash chute is a luxury for your home or building. It takes much of the work of refuse disposal out of your hands giving you more time to focus on other things. Trash chutes do need maintenance though as they get quite a bit of work over years of use and sometimes abuse. One of the most used parts is the trash chute handle and the accompanying latch. Both need to be checked regularly for proper operation to ensure the best life from your trash chute.
Upon inspection of the trash chute, you will notice the “T” shape of the trash chute handle. Although there are other types of handles, this is by far the most popular type. If your handle is keyed, check the keyhole for chipped or frayed areas that can cause sticking during unlocking. Check the handle itself for any denting as well as smooth operation when the handle is turned. Now we come to the latch which looks similar to the one on your front door. What you are checking for here is again any denting or warped edges that could impede operation of the trash chute handle and keep the door from closing properly. You also want to make sure the latch operates smoothly when the handle is turned. If any of the components did not look or operate properly during inspection, it may be time to replace the trash chute handle.
Replacement of the trash chute handle and the accompanying latch are as easy as replacing any other door hardware and should only require a screwdriver. You only need to ensure that you follow all directions carefully as to avoid any mishaps or voiding any warranties that may be attributed to the product.
